DEBARUN, RAJAT K TANGRI AND RIMI NAYAK GAVE THREE OPTIONS AT LAKMÉ FASHION WEEK SUMMER/RESORT 2011

ROMANCE AND STYLE CAME ALIVE ON THE CATWALK WITH THE OPULENT AND CHASTE COLLECTION BY DEBARUN

March 3, 2011, Mumbai: When love and undying romance inspire fashion, the collection is an ode to creativity. Debarun’s Summer/Resort 2011 collection at Lakmé Fashion Week inspired by Opulent and Chaste was a love story created around the simple cotton kora fabric in natural ecru tones.

Adding twinkling gold appliqués to reflect the theme, Debarun added floral motifs which were sprinkled over the elegant, timeless, simple silhouettes. Working strictly around Indian forms, there were kurtas teamed with pleated drawstring pants interspersed with saris as well as some colourful Can-Cans and ‘A’ line lehengas for women.

Some of the striking creations were the long A line ghagra with pleated blouse, the flared mid length skirt with a fitted waist length blouse and pleated pants, the divine appliquéd sari with sleeveless blouse and the dazzling long mermaid tail lehenga with a short blouse.

Men’s wear was stylish with long slim kurtas worn with pre-stitched dhotis, sleeveless jackets and trousers with interesting side box pleats. Keeping the silhouette fitted, there were long kurtas with linen pants, sleeveless side buttoned jackets with pleated trousers and long jackets teamed with kurtas sporting side detailing.

The show stopper was the very dashing star of Guzaarish and Action Replay, Bollywood’s new wonder boy Aditya Roy Kapoor in an appliquéd jacket with gold shirt and narrow pants.

Ecru and gold worked beautifully for the ethnic creations that will make great Summer/Resort 2011 wear from Debarun.

RAJAT K TANGRI’S ARTISTIC COLLECTION CREATED DRAMA ON THE RUNWAY

Art and fashion came together in Rajat K Tangri’s collection inspired by the Italian painter Fra’ Filippo Lippi from the early Renaissance period. Keeping the ensembles very feminine and sexy for women, Rajat added discreet designing touches of men’s wear in basic styles. The collection called “Bella Donna” featured the beautiful paintings of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus placed in strategic places of the outfits.

Working around his signature silhouettes, Rajat had slim gowns and dresses interspersed with jackets in luxurious fabrics like taffeta, silk and organza. Colours were elegantly subdued with corals, pastels and black forming the core creations. Adding that touch of grandeur Rajat splashed large doses of jewelled embroidery and exclusive prints to highlight the creations.

Opening the show with a peach pleated folded sheath followed by a jumpsuit, Rajat had cute gathered dresses cinched at the waist, a striking flame red shirt dress, black jumpsuit with printed organza sleeves and a one shoulder mini with ruffles cascading down the front. The finale entry was a silver shimmering sheath that glittered down the catwalk.

For men’s wear, there were peach pleated shorts, sea green men’s suit, a black one-button jacket with slim pants and a very causal black jumpsuit.

The hot star of Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, Randeep Hooda strutted down the catwalk to end the show in a one-button printed jacket and black trousers.

For garments that will make show stopping entries for men and women, Rajat K Tangri offers the perfect options.

RIMI NAYAK’S UNIQUE COLLECTION WAS A STUDY IN UNCONVENTIONAL CREATIVITY

Inspired by Roman kilts and Grecian drapes, Rimi Nayak’s Summer/Resort 2011 collection at Lakmé Fashion Week was a unique blend of buttons and weave. There was asymmetry and interesting structures while appliqué panelling gave a fluid graceful look to the ensembles.

Resort dresses, a few saris and draped kurtas set the mood of the range with discreet touches of styling. Ombre shading came together artistically with hand brush paintings in colours that were breezy light and ideal for resort wear.

Soft crepe and silk in shades of blue, aqua, peach, salmon pink, dull green were used for fluid shapes with drapes and cowls that at times unfurled into flowing trains in the front or back of the garments. Touches of origami appeared for the sheaths, on the skirts while drawstring cowled jumpsuits had a feminine look and feel.

The interesting aspect of the collection was the use of the simple button as embellishments and not to just fasten the dress; so clusters in pastel shades appeared as bands on pale peach shifts, around necklines or as shoulder detailing.

For some innovative fashion directions that recreate the mix of the past with the present, it will be Rimi Nayak who will show the right directions.
