JATIN VARMA AND VIVEK KUMAR PRESENTED AMAZING FASHION STATEMENTS FOR THE COMING SEASON AT LAKMÉ FASHION WEEK WINTER/FESTIVE 2010

JATIN VARMA’S LINE WAS A PERFECT FORMAL WEAR OFFERING FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON

If it’s a very feminine fashionable and youthful line that women of 2010 want to go for, then Jatin Varma has some great options. His walk on the wild side collection called “Lady Labyrinth” from Greek mythology at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2010 allows the modern woman to reveal the wildness in a woman’s nature.

His colours were muted and vibrant with plum, black, teal, pink and wine with wild asymmetric hemlines and weaves, which spelt glamour all the way. It was western wear with a mix of empire line tops, lots of structures and drapes with some multi panelled skirts, dresses and lots of luxurious shapes in satin, Dupion silk, polyamide and Lycra.

Jatin enjoyed playing with cuts, colours and fabrics and there was an abundance of that but all ended in a very finely tailored collection. Unusual weaves appeared as yarns criss crossed through them, tucks and folds played with the fabrics and the seam edged stitches and the textures gave the line a truly feminine look. Crystals and soft fabric buttons highlighted the creations and fitted into the labyrinth theme.

The show stealers were the black dress with deep V neck embellished with self buttons and crystals on the shoulder, the gown with basket weave in twin colours of blue and purple chiffon, the pink off shoulder dress with tie up neck and self buttons and crystals. The wine silk evening gown with velvet and silk corset, the lovely full sequin grey and white animal print short dress with crystals edging the cut out neck and finally the fully sequined black jacket with giant balloon sleeves were eyecatchers.

Here was women’s wear from Jatin Varma that spelt elegance and sophisticated style for evening wear anywhere in the world.

VIVEK KUMAR ADDED THE RIGHT TOUCHES OF TECHNO CHIC AND DETAILING TO HIS COLLECTION

When technology, electronics and mechanism come together in fashion to turn one piece of clothing into an accessory or vice versa; then the presentation is very interesting and that is exactly what Vivek Kumar did with his “Circuit Darzi” line Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2010.

It was unbelievable but possible that there is not much difference between fashion and the concept of industrial designing and when the two meet the result on the ramp can be outstanding.

Bringing in electric motors, sliders and cable driven mechanisms, the collection was out of the ordinary on many fronts. With flat bed knits, lots of net, reprinted satin and jersey, Vivek created silhouettes that were structured but with astonishing touches like torn fabrics layering and drapes. Colours were the normal winter festive shades of coffee, teal, deep green, red, mustard and black.

Opening the show with street noises and wild drum beats which set the pace for the hi tech collection; what emerged was a long sleeve knit tunic teamed with helmet and shining discs. The clothes that followed had electronic parts for embellishments instead of the conventional beads and sequins.

A long sleeve shift with circuit motors spinning down the front was amazing and another empire line organza with embroidery, a petalled dress in brown and black, a grey smock with cutout long sleeve, gleaming collar with smudgy print chiffon dress, one shoulder brown toga in knit with gold discs and embroidered yoke, a glittering one with discs all over to finally the muddy print on brown for an “A” line gown which suddenly enlarged into a giant tent was the direction that Vivek’s creativity took. Bandanas with rolls of fabrics and wires as hair accessories and very interesting footwear to match the creations added to the look of the ensembles.

Here was a collection for a thinking woman who appreciates the designing skills of Vivek Kumar, a very unconventional designer who likes to think out of the box.
